Before import
Before starting the import process, please look at this checklist to ensure the contact list is imported correctly.
How-to video
Step 1: Choose the type of import
Go to Imports → Create import, and choose Contacts as your import option.
Step 2: Select the file
Add your list via the drag-and-drop function or click to select file. The import file needs to be in CSV format.
If you have the list in similar structures, like .xlsx or .xls, you can often easily export the file to CSV format with just a few clicks. Read more here.
Each contact row must contain at least an email address or mobile number. Otherwise, the contact will not be imported.
Standard attributes
Standard attributes available in MarketHype are First name, Last name, Email, Phone number, Address, Zip code, City, Country, Gender, and Birthday.
Here is an example of a correct structure with standard attributes:
First name | Last name | Phone number | Gender
Anna | Andersen | 0046 70 000 00 | Female
Berry | Baker | 0046 70 111 11 11 | Male
Carl | Carter | 0046 70 222 22 22 | Male |
Custom attributes
Create and use custom attributes to add additional attributes to the contacts based on your organization's needs.
Here is an example of the structure to use custom attributes for different data types:
Customer number (Numbers) | Genre | Gold customer (True/False) |
101 | Pop, Soul, Rock | TRUE |
102 | Rock, Jazz | FALSE |
103 | House, Jazz | FALSE |
Step 3: Set the information required
When the file is chosen, click on next and enter the information needed:
Subscription Type:
Choose the subscription type(s) to which you want to import the contacts. If they should be imported to a new subscription type, you must create it before you continue with the import. This is done here.
Consider how you want to communicate with the contacts in your file. Create a new subscription type for contacts who should receive separate communication from your other audience, such as sponsors.
Legal basis:
Set what type of consent the contacts on the list have given:
Freely given: The contact has actively given you consent by, e.g., signing up through a newsletter signup form.
Legitimate interest: The contact did not actively give you consent but showed an interest in you or your organization by, for example, buying a product from you.
When did you get their consent?
MarketHype will help you keep track of which contacts have valid consents. Therefore, you need to set when each consent was given for this to be possible. There are two options:
Get consent from a column in my file
If the import file includes consent timestamps, you can import it and select the relevant column in the next step.
Choose date
If the information is missing from the file, you can select a date from when the consent will be valid. All contacts in the file will then have the same opt-in date.
Step 4: Select the column that holds the opt-in date
If you chose "Get consent from a column in my file" in the previous step, you select the right column here.
Step 5: Map the columns
Map your file's columns with the correct contact attributes in MarketHype. Standard attributes like first name, email, etc., as well as any custom attributes you've created, will be available.
Simply match the different columns with the correct attribute. For example, match your file's column with First names to the MarketHypes attribute First name.
Column in file: shows the name of the columns in your file.
Map to attribute: this is where you choose which attribute your column should map to in MarketHype.
Sample column data: shows examples of what your columns include.
Step 6: Name your import
The last step before hitting the Import button is to give your import a name.
Note that the name you give the import only appears in the Import overview, which shows what type of import you have made.
Step 7: Import the list
When set, click on Import, and the import will start.
Please note that once you click Import, the changes cannot be undone.
Also, MarketHype doesn't store or save imported files, so make sure to save the file on your computer if needed.
Import statistics
When the import is finished, statistics will display the number of successfully imported rows and whether there were any errors.
Errors could, for example, occur if there's an empty row in the file or if a contact row is missing an email address, making it impossible to import the contact.
If you open the import from the overview, you'll find more information about the row that caused the error. Always take the displayed row number and add +1 since the first row in the file always contains the column headers.
