Merge tags can be added to the text in your email and SMS content, the subject line, preview text, and even the plain text version of your email.

Add to email content

To insert a merge tag in your email content, select a text block and place the cursor at the spot in your text where you want to insert a merge tag. Now click on the Merge Tags dropdown from the text toolbar and select the merge tag you want to insert.

Add to email content

Add to the subject line or preview text

From the Settings tab in the email editor, next to the input fields for Subject and Preview text, there is a button named Add merge tag; click on it to choose what kind of merge tag you want to insert in the dialog, and click Add.

Add to plain text version

A plain text version is automatically generated from the HTML version of your email, and if you insert merge tags when designing your email, they will be added to the plain text version. To add a new merge tag to a custom plain text version of your email, go to the Settings tab in the editor, click Edit next to the Plain text version, and toggle Auto-generate to Off. Now, you can click Add merge tag to choose and then add a new merge tag to your plain text version.

Add to SMS content

The Add merge tag button is available underneath the Message text block. Click on it to choose the type of merge tag you want to add.

Combine merge tags

You can use merge tags individually or combine them to create a complete sentence.

An example:

"Hello {{person.firstName}}!

The {{{dateFormat "yy MM dd" event:startDate}}} we look forward to welcoming you to {{event:name}}. The event starts {{{dateFormat "HH:mm" event:startDate}}}"

This would resolve into:

"Hello Zaklina!

The 24 04 01 we look forward to welcoming you to The event. The event starts 19:00.

Setting default values

If the data that a merge tag is referring to is missing, you need to add a default value for the merge tag.

For broadcast email and SMS, this is done under the Settings tab, and the section Default merge tag values.

For automatons, you find the Default merge tag values in the Send SMS/Send Email block.

Test the result

You can send a test email to see what your email will look like when sent, with the merge tags resolved to their correct values from your data.

In the email editor, click Send test email to choose where to send it, and toggle Set merge tags to specify what you want your merge tags to resolve to. If you don’t specify any merge tag values, the default merge tag values you set in the Email tab will be what the merge tags resolve to in your test email.
