What are signup automations?

Signup automations are triggered when a contact completes a signup. This allows you to send automated welcome messages and follow-up communications to new subscribers.

The automation can be configured to send immediately after, or sometime after their signup.

How-to video

Step 1: Choose an automation recipe

Go to Automations → Create automation, and select the type of signup automation you want to create. These automations are located under the "Nurture your subscribers" section.

Welcome new email/SMS subscribers

Send a welcome email or SMS when someone signs up via a form.

Convert email/SMS subscribers to buyers

Send an email or SMS sometime after signup if they have not made an order.

Step 2: What to trigger

Here, you select at least one signup form for which the automation should trigger.

If you're creating an SMS automation, only signup forms collecting a mobile number will be available to select here.

Step 3: Select subscription type

If the form(s) selected in the previous step have more than one subscription type assigned, this is where you specify which one of the subscription types you want to send the message to.

For example, if a signup form includes two subscription types, allowing the subscriber to choose either Concert or Conference news. In this step, select the subscription type you want to use for this automation.

However, if your form collects only one subscription type, it will already be pre-selected.

Step 4: When to trigger

Set the timing for when you want the communication to be sent in relation to the signup.

Welcome new email/SMS subscribers

  • As soon as the subscriber confirms the signup

  • Sometime after they confirm their subscription

Convert email/SMS subscribers to buyers

  • Sometime after they confirm their subscription

Step 5: Name your automation

Give your automation a name. This is only for internal use and will be displayed in the automation overview.

Step 6: Add optional filters

We have now set the automation base. If you wish to send the automation to all subscribers, you can proceed to step 6 and compose the email or SMS.

However, if you only want to send the automation to subscribers within a specific target group, you can modify the recipients in the "Add a filter" block.

When using the "Convert subscribers to buyers" recipe, the "Add a filter" block already has a pre-set filter to exclude subscribers who have already placed an order from the automation. To delete or modify the filter, open the filter window and make the necessary adjustments.

Step 7: Create your email or SMS

Email automations

Click on the "Send email" block, followed by the "Design email" button, to design the email. When finished, exit the editor to fill in the sender, subject line, and preview text.

SMS automations

Click on the "Send SMS" block to choose the sender name and compose the message. This article provides further information on creating an SMS.

Tip! Get personal and make the subscriber feel extra welcome by using a merge tag, such as first name. This will be more effective if you also collect this in your signup form.

Step 8: Test your automation

Email automations

Open the "Send email" block and hover over the email design to locate the "Preview and Test" button. Here, you can preview the design in both desktop and mobile views, share a preview link with colleagues, and send test emails.

SMS automations

Open the "Send SMS" block, and a "Send test SMS" button will appear at the bottom.

Step 9: Start the automation

Once you are satisfied with your automation, it's time to activate it. Press "Start" in the upper-right corner to review the setup. Once you confirm, the automation will begin sending according to the established rules. 🎉
