How to: Use event tags

Categorize your events with tags so you can filter, segment, trigger automations, and target your communication.

Written by Zaklina Udovicic

Quick summary

  • Event tags let you categorize events and use them in the audience filter, to create segments, as triggers for event automations, and in your email and SMS communication.

  • An event can have several tags - you'll find them under the event description.

  • Tag events in your ticketing system, or directly in MarketHype.

Event tags are a way to categorize your events so you can put them to work across MarketHype - in the audience filter, to create segments, as triggers for event automations, and to target your emails and SMS. An event can have more than one tag, and you'll find all of an event's tags under the event description.

In the events overview, you can also filter your events by tag using the filter next to the search field.

Tag events in your ticketing system

Upcoming events

If you tag your events when you set them up in your ticketing system, the tags import into MarketHype automatically along with the event information. Making this a habit saves you time and keeps things consistent.

Event tags update once a day.

To tag events from your ticketing system, look for these terms:

  • AXS – tags

  • Tickster – tags

  • Tixly – categories

  • Ticketmaster – genre

ℹ️ Note: Ticketmaster only works with its default genres, so you can't create your own. If you're a Ticketmaster customer, we recommend tagging your events directly in MarketHype - both upcoming and past ones.

Past events

Past events are usually frozen, so new tags from your ticketing system aren't picked up - you'll tag those directly in MarketHype (see below).

ℹ️ Note: If you set event tags in your ticketing system before you started using MarketHype, those tags come along with the first import – for both upcoming and past events.

Tag events in MarketHype

Upcoming events

For upcoming events, you can use only one tagging method at a time. From the start, MarketHype follows your ticketing system.

⚠️ Important: If you add a tag directly in MarketHype on an upcoming event, MarketHype stops picking up new tags from your ticketing system for that event. You can keep tagging it in MarketHype, but the ticketing-system sync for event tags won't resume.

Past events

Because past events are usually frozen, tagging them directly in MarketHype is the reliable way to tag them.

There are two ways to tag your events in MarketHype. Both start in Events.

From the events overview

From Sales → Events, you can tag one or several events with the same tag at once. Select the relevant events using the checkbox in the top-left corner of each event card, and then the second icon at the bottom of the screen – Edit tags.

In Edit tags, you'll see all the tags the selected events already have. To add a tag, use the Add tag field to find an existing tag or create a new one.

To remove a tag from the selected events, just uncheck it.

If you type a tag name that doesn't exist yet, the option New tag: [name] appears so you can create it.

From a specific event

This option tags one event at a time. Open the event, click Actions on the right, then choose Edit tags.

💡 Tip: Once your events are tagged, there's a lot you can do with them - segments, automations, and audience insights. See Inspiration: Make the most out of event tags for ideas on putting them to work.
