Why is my email locked for editing?

Understand why an email locks for editing, how to keep it from happening, and what to do when you need to keep working right away.

Written by Nina Winter

An email can only be open for editing in one place at a time. This keeps two people – or two of your own browser windows – from editing the same email at once and overwriting each other's work.

You'll see one of two messages, depending on who has the email open.

You already have it open somewhere else

You are already editing the email [email name] in another window, close this one down and continue in the other.

This usually means you've opened the email in a second tab or window. Close the other one and keep working there.

A colleague has it open

The email [email name] is being edited by [colleague] and is locked for editing until [colleague] leaves the email editor, or has been inactive for 5 minutes.

The email stays locked until your colleague leaves the editor, or until they've been inactive for 5 minutes.

How to avoid getting locked out

When you're done, leave the email by clicking Exit – don't just close the browser tab.

Clicking Exit tells MarketHype you've left, so the email is released right away. Closing the tab doesn't: MarketHype still thinks you're in there, and the email stays locked until the 5-minute inactivity timer runs out.

ℹ️ Note: Closed a tab by accident? No harm done - just wait up to 5 minutes and the lock releases on its own.

In a hurry? Work in a copy

If an email is locked and you can't wait, duplicate it and keep working in the copy.

  1. On the locked email, click More.

  2. Select Duplicate.

Everything carries over to the copy so you won't miss anything. The copy is a separate email that isn't locked, so you can start editing right away.

Just remember it is a separate email – so if a colleague is working on the original, check in with each other so there's no confusion about which version is the right one.
