# Export contacts
Exporting contacts for use on your marketing platforms is a key feature of MarketHype.
Through MarketHype's "Audience" section you can use demographics data and purchase information to find the right audience for your marketing campaign. All relevant data about the contacts is then easily exported to any of your marketing platform integrations, or to a file for manual import on platforms not yet supported through an integration.
Available export options
The number of export options you see vary based on the integrations you have setup for your organization. More about integrations here.
To make an export you go to the Audience page and click on Export in to top right corner.
# Selecting your audience
The first step in the export flow is to find your audience. You can read more on filtering here.
On the top right of the filter view you'll find an updated count of contacts that matches your filter and you can also click preview to get more details on the current selection.
# Marketing consent
When exporting contacts to use as the target for a marketing campaign, it is important to respect the marketing consent given by those contacts. More about marketing consents, how they are handled in MarketHype and why they are important is available in the marketing consent section of the documentation.
# Communicate with consenting users
Respecting your contacts whishes when it comes to marketing is an important part of your marketing communication (you want to be perceived as nice and friendly organization, right?). When the exported audience is meant to be used for direct marketing communication, you should always use the subscribers filter to make sure you only include contacts who consent to receive your information.
When a subscribers filter is applied, we make sure only contacts with a valid consent for the given subscription type(s) are included in the result. If your contacts have multiple known email addresses or phone numbers, we make sure to only include those addresses you have received consent for.
# Communicate with everyone
Sometimes you need to send non-marketing information to everyone in your audience - maybe you have important information for everyone attending a specific event. In these cases you might want to actually include everyone, even if they haven't given consent to marketing, and of course we support that as well. By not adding a subscribers filter, your exported audience will include everyone matching your filter, even if they haven't given you a marketing consent. The export will also include all known email addresses and phone numbers for each contact.
Respect your contacts
Ignoring marketing consents should only be done for important non-marketing information, and only when you really need to communicate with everyone. With great power comes great responsibility!
# Export to Apsis
If you have an integration setup for Apsis, then the "Export to Apsis" option will be available to you.
By exporting contacts to Apsis, you will be able to either create a new, or updated an existing Apsis mailing list with contacts from your database.
# Use an existing list
When exporting to an existing list, you select which list you want to export to. You also select if you only want to add new contacts to the list, or if you want to both add new and update already existing contacts on the list.
# Create a new list
When creating a new list for your export, you provide necessary information for any Apsis mailing list - a name, a description and sender information. On clicking "Export" a new mailing list will be created for you on Apsis and the exported contacts will be added to the newly created list.
# Export to Facebook
If you have a Facebook integration setup for your organization, then the "Export to Facebook" option will be available to you.
By exporting contacts to Facebook, you will be able to either create a new, or updated an existing Facebook custom audience with contacts from your database. The custom audience can then be used as it is to reach your contacts with marketing messages across Facebook and Instagram, or as the source audience for a Lookalike audience.
Facebook will use the information included in the export and try to match it against Facebook users. This means that the actual audience most likely will include fewer people than the number of contacts you've exported. There will be contacts that doesn't have a Facebook account, or that haven't provided enough information in order for Facebook to find a match.
# Use an existing audience
When exporting to a existing custom audience, you select which custom audience you want to export to. This custom audience will be extended with the contacts included in the export - leaving existing contacts in the audience untouched.
# Create a new audience
When creating a new custom audience for your export, you provide a name and description for the audience you want to create. On clicking "Export" a new custom audience will be created for you on Facebook and the exported contacts will be added to the newly created audience.
If you plan to use your new custom audience as the source audience for a Lookalike audience, then you should consider including life time value when creating the audience.
When including life time value the export will also contain the total lifetime purchase value of each contact in the export - the total amount of money the contact has spent on your organization.
A regular Lookalike audience will consider all contacts in the custom audience when looking for similar Facebook users. If you include life time value in your export, you can create a Value-based Lookalike audience - the Lookalike audience will then be made up of the people most similar to your highest value customers.

Depending on your Mailchimp plan, there may be a limit to how many audiences you can create on your Mailchimp account.
# Export to File
With the "Export to File" option, you can choose to export your data to either csv or Excel (xlsx) format. This allows you to transfer customer information to platforms where there is no integration available yet.
The export feature comes with three pre-defined export templates, each described below, and a custom option where you define what columns to include and what export behavior you want.
# Email addresses
The list type "Email addresses" is useful when the export is meant for email send outs. It includes the name, address, birth date and email address of all contacts included in the export.
For contacts with multiple known email addresses, there will be multiple lines in the export for those contacts - one for each email address. This is to make it easier to import the data to email marketing systems. If you only want a single line for each contact, this can be achieved using the Custom option.
# Phone numbers
The list type "Phone numbers" is useful when the export is meant for SMS send outs or call lists. It includes the name, address, birth date and phones numbers of all contacts included in the export.
For contacts with multiple known phone numbers, there will be multiple lines in the export for those contacts - one for each phone number. This is to make it easier to import the data to SMS marketing systems. If you only want a single line for each contact, this can be achieved using the Custom list type.
The list type "Addresses" is useful when the export is meant for postal send outs. It includes the name, address and birth date of all contacts included in the export.
When exporting addresses, consider checking the "Verified persons only" checkbox, to only include contacts where the address is confirmed to be the address where the person is actually registered.
# Custom export
With the custom export you can customize the export to fit your needs. You have three options to customize your export.
- Fields - Specify what data to include in the export. The selected fields will be included as separate columns in the file.
- Unwind - A contact can have multiple phone numbers or email addresses. By default, each contact will be represented by a single line in the export file, where the values of a field that can have multiple values is combined into one column. If such a field is chosen to be include in the export, then you can choose to unwind one of those fields. If a field is chosen for unwind, then a contact will be represented by multiple lines in the export - one for each value in the field that was chosen to unwind. The unwinded field will be different on each line, but all other columns will be the same on each line.
- Ignore empty - In some cases you might want to exclude contacts if a certain value is missing on the contact. If you choose to ignore empty birth dates, then contacts where the birth date is unknown will be excluded from the export.
You want to create a file that includes name and email address of each contact. If a contact have multiple email addresses, you want one line in the export for each email address for the contact. If a contact doesn't have a known first name, you want to exclude the contact from the export.
Select fields first name, last name and email. Select unwind on email. Select ignore empty first name.
